An exemplary French Centre Table or Writing Desk, dating from the late 19th century. The table features a finely shaped top with a tortoiseshell-inspired center, bordered by intricate marquetry inlay and a cast ormolu edge. The frieze is equipped with a single drawer, adorned with ormolu-lined burlwood panels and embellished with eight gilt goat's head mounts at each corner. At each end, urn-shaped ormolu mounts enhance the design. The piece is supported by elegantly fluted, tapered legs, connected by a gracefully shaped stretcher, surmounted by a substantial dore bronze urn finial. The table rests on peg feet with castors. This item has been meticulously refinished to preserve its original beauty.
