One of the principal furniture-makers of his era, German-born Guillaume Grohe (1804-1885) went to Paris in 1827 with his brother to realize their dream of having their own furniture business. Their intuitive designs won them favor at the eighth Exposition de l’Industrie in 1834 where they showed Egyptian and Gothic style furnishings. The brothers would later win the gold medal in 1844. In 1862, Grohe´showed the extent of his singular talents at the International Exhibition where he won a medal for a piece created in the Louis XVI taste. He built a solid reputation as a master craftsman, often placed among the ranks of Boulle, Gouthie’re and Riesener, supplying furnishings to Queen Victoria, Louis-Philippe, Napoleon III and his wife Empress Euge´nie.
